How do I apply decals?
The first issue to consider is the environment. The best temperature range for vinyl adhesion is between 60 - 80 Degrees. Application should not be attempted when the temperature is below 40 Degrees. Also, humidity above 85% will negatively affect the adhesion process. If possible, you should attempt to apply the decals in a covered area so wind and debris won’t become a problem.
Next, you’ll want a clean surface to apply the vinyl graphics. Use a household dishwashing soap and water solution to thoroughly clean the application area. I also recommend using Denatured alcohol to remove any remaining residue.
Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the graphics.
The graphic consists of three separate pieces.
- Transfer Tape
- Vinyl Graphic
- Backing Paper
1. Place the decal on a flat surface and using a flat item, firmly rub the graphic starting from the center and move out toward the edges. This is to ensure the decal is attached to the transfer tape.
2. Create a "hinge" using masking tape. 2" tape works best for this with 1" on the graphic and 1" on the surface.
3. Hold the bottom of the graphic away from the surface, and slowly separate the backing paper from the transfer tape and graphic. Take care to ensure all the vinyl is attached to the transfer tape as they come apart.
4. Once the transfer tape and vinyl graphic are separated, let the backing paper fall away and then merge the graphic to the surface working from top to bottom, then from the center outward. Start with light strokes, and then increase the pressure to ensure the vinyl adheres to the surface.
5. When the graphic is fully adhered, slowly and gently removed the transfer tape. Be careful not to remove the vinyl with the transfer tape. If part of the vinyl starts to come up, simply smooth it down with the transfer tape, and then restart the transfer tape removal process again.
6. When the transfer tape is removed, lightly rub the vinyl with your fingers to ensure it’s completed attached. Also check the decal for bubbles. Most small bubbles will disappear on their own within a day or so as the air escapes. For larger bubbles, you can pierce them with a sewing needle to allow the air to escape.
